About

I have been working with computers in one way or another for almost 50 years.  My first exposure was a DigiComp I , a functioning mechanical computer that sold as a toy back in the late 1960s.

Fast forward about 10 years, and I found myself fascinated by the Altair  8800 — some engineering students who taught a basic electronics course I was taking had built one. The program demonstrated was affecting an AM radio held against the backplane of the computer.  It was playing “Daisy”, of course.

Forward a few more years and I had joined the Navy, taken electronics training, built several small computer systems and purchased an Apple ][ computer.

I graduated from University almost 20 years after that mechanical computer piqued my interest. I spent the next 10 years as Research Fellow at that same University as a Systems Administrator.

I have been doing such work for another 20 years after leaving University. Operating systems come and go, hardware gets less expensive, what was old is now new again.  And I’ve always remembered that first system fondly.

What do I want to do with this site?

I want to share my thoughts about Systems Administration, about what I’m working on these days.  Let me know what you think.
